Perennial decorative carnation in the garden

What is perennial carnation as a garden plant? It is a wonderful decoration for any kind of landscape. With its help, they decorate not only borders, but also very large areas where it is difficult to grow something.

How the perennial carnation is grown

Carnation (Diánthus) belongs to the category of perennial herbaceous ornamental flowering plants of the Clove family. "Dianthus" is a Greek word translated as "flower of the gods" (the prefix "Di" means Zeus, and "anthos" means flower, roughly speaking "flower of Zeus"). There are a large number of their varieties:

  • Chinese variety (Dianthus chinensis);
  • The variety is pinnate or Hungarian (Dianthus plumarius);
  • Turkish, or bearded variety (Dianthus barbátus).

Under natural conditions, there are on average 300 species of carnations. They grow well in Asia and Europe, North Africa and North America, but the plant is most commonly found in the Mediterranean. Feathery is native to Western Europe, the Alps. Chinese - from North and East China, the south of Primorsky Territory, Japan. Turkish - from Central and Southern Europe.

Without exception, all varieties prefer the sun, otherwise you will not get lush flowering. Turkish and Chinese carnations are quite suitable for partial shade cultivation. They all love light, drained and moisture-permeable soils, that is, loam or sandy loam. The main thing is not to plant them on acidic peat bogs.

These are drought-resistant plants, they tolerate cold well, grow easily outdoors. Can react to spring and autumn temperature changes. But in general, the perennial carnation hibernates without shelter and pleases the owners for a long time with flowering.
