Stamped gooseberry - shrub on a leg

Growing plants on boles (stems from 60 cm in height) has been practiced by gardeners for quite some time. The advantages of this method are undeniable. It is a pleasure to take care of plants, harvesting is easy and quick. Not at all like removing wheatgrass from the thickets of a bush or picking fruits from thorny branches, while being in an unrespectable position. In addition, the bushes growing on the stems are less susceptible to the risk of disease. If the ground around the trunk is covered with an opaque mulching material, then you can forget about weeding.

However, the standard gooseberry also has negative sides. The main drawback is a very complex and laborious technology for the production of seedlings. As a result, they are little grown and their price is higher than that of other species. In addition, in winter, ordinary gooseberry bushes can hide under the snow, and the bushes on the boles remain in the frost-hazardous zone.

Stages of growing gooseberries on boles:

  • For several years, standard seedlings are grown;
  • The aboveground part is cut off;
  • Of all the shoots that appear, the strongest is left;
  • The next year, in the spring, all the buds are removed, except for the top 5;
  • Subsequently, the branches form the future crown of the bush.

The formation of a bush consists of pruning and distributing branches around the trunk. Annual growths should be removed, and the growing shoots should be taken to the sides. The standard gooseberry can be produced in another way - it is grafted into golden currants. However, such a stock gives a lot of growth, which must be systematically removed.
