Forcing tulips at home

Forcing tulips at home makes tulips bloom several months earlier than usual. Thanks to this, blooming tulips can be obtained even for the New Year, Christmas or March 8.

Forcing are activities that aim to make plants bloom at certain times of the year. In our latitudes in winter, plants are dormant, in this way they adapt to winter conditions. Bulbous plants also go through a dormant period. It seems that the life of the plant at this time freezes, but complex processes take place in the bulb, the organs of the plant are formed.

After digging from open ground, the bulbs are stored first at high temperatures and then at lower temperatures. For an earlier flowering of tulips, they are grown under a film and decapitation of flowers. They can also do early digging of the bulbs. First, the bulbs are stored at a temperature of 34 degrees, and then they are transferred to the refrigerator.

For bulbs, it is advisable to use a breathable and moisture-absorbing material. The bulbs must be planted so that a layer of soil remains above the bulb. After planting, the bulbs are watered. Then they are transferred to a basement with a temperature of up to 10 degrees. At the end of December, the temperature is lowered to 4 degrees.

3 weeks before flowering, the plants are transferred to a room with a temperature of up to 15 degrees. The first days the lighting should be weak, then full lighting is given. Small sprouts can be covered with dark caps. Plants need to be watered periodically and fed with calcium nitrate.

Forcing tulips at home, following the basic rules, will bring excellent results.
