Growing asparagus from seeds

Asparagus or asparagus is one of the most expensive vegetable crops. But its taste and benefits overshadow the high cost. In addition, the advantage of asparagus is that it is an early vegetable; its young fresh shoots are eaten, which can already be harvested in April-May.

It turns out that growing asparagus from seeds is no more difficult than sowing cabbage. The main difference is that for the germination of asparagus seeds, the temperature must be maintained at a higher temperature, namely + 25-30 degrees.

You can sow asparagus seeds directly into open ground in seedling beds. But to accelerate germination, the seeds must first be soaked. This process is not fast: for about 5-6 days, asparagus seeds should be held in water with a temperature of + 30-35 degrees.

After that, the seeds are placed in layers of damp cloth (possibly in paper) for a period of 3 to 7 days. This activity is necessary for pecking seeds. If this is not done, the seeds will germinate only after 10-15 days in the garden, and those that have hatched will germinate in a week.

It is necessary to fertilize the ridge for planting with manure (rotted, not fresh) or compost with the addition of complex fertilizer. The seeds are sown to a depth of 2 cm, keeping a distance of 5-7 cm between them. After the emergence of seedlings, they are thinned out, leaving only the strongest.

Growing asparagus from seeds is not fast: in a month and a half, the sprouts are stretched to only 10-15 cm. Therefore, for a couple of seasons they will grow in seed beds.

Caring for asparagus seedlings includes weeding and regular watering, and in June the sprouts are fed with nitrogen fertilizer or used 1: 6 diluted manure with water.
