Sea buckthorn is a deciduous tree or shrub with incredibly thorny branches. It is distinguished by frost resistance, drought resistance, grows on almost any soil and bears fruit with berries, which are full of healing and useful properties that help to cope with many diseases, they make delicious marmalade, jelly, jelly, jam, juice and other drinks.

Sea buckthorn, the cultivation of which is not difficult, is a grateful plant, however, without following one single rule, sea buckthorn will not bear fruit. The cultivation of sea buckthorn will be successful only if there are a pair of female plants on the site and a male bush, then with the help of the wind, effective pollination and setting of berries will take place.

Sea buckthorn - growing and care

In sea buckthorn, the roots spread far, it needs a large hole of at least 50 cm on all sides, the root collar of the sea buckthorn needs to be deepened by at least 4 cm, but no more than 10 cm, if the planting is too deep, the plant will not develop normally ...

For planting, it is better to choose a high-quality seedling from trusted manufacturers, which already has two or more years, which has three root branches at least forty centimeters long each. You need to plant sea buckthorn in an open place where there is a lot of sun.

Every year you need to apply fertilizers, remove only frozen, broken, weak branches, and sea buckthorn will begin to bear fruit from the fourth year after planting. You cannot dig up the ground near the sea buckthorn, this can damage its roots, spreading shallowly in the ground, and also provoke the appearance of numerous root shoots.

Sea buckthorn is resistant to diseases, however, it is often affected by berry endomycosis and sea buckthorn green aphids. To combat aphids, you need to use 0.3 percent karbofos, and if berries are affected by endomycosis, 3 percent nitrafen should be used.

When picking berries, you need to be patient and act carefully so as not to break the branches, the broken branches will begin to bear fruit again only after two years. After ten years, it is better to cut the trunk - to rejuvenate the plant, it will recover itself, since after twelve years of life the sea buckthorn ceases to bear fruit normally. Also, do not let the sea buckthorn grow very high, it is better to cut the trunk at a comfortable height for you, so that picking berries is convenient, the sea buckthorn normally tolerates such an "operation".

The main thing is not to plant sea buckthorn close to the area where you are going to plant vegetables, because its root system grows very much along the surface of the soil and can be damaged when digging.

For a long time, our bush did not produce fruit, until in a neighboring plot, the owner planted three sea buckthorn bushes, one of which was "wild".
We, at that time, did not know that sea buckthorn should be mutually pollinated.
